Here's the recent Google Geonews not yet covered on Slashgeo. There are new countries which benefit from the Weather layer of Google Earth, including Europe, Canada, Alaska, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico (previous announcement). Google also announced a major imagery update last week, touching over 86 countries. There's the 2008 Olympics torch relay maps and related information. We now have the New York Times directly in Google Earth in real-time, the GEB also provides additional coverage (thanks Frank for letting me know directly). Here's new Google Transit covered areas and discussion about GTFS, an open format named Google Transit Feed Specification. There's a new Greenpeace layer, UNICEF and much more in Google Earth. Spatially Adjusted has an entry about leveraging Google App Engine in GIS applications. Slashdot discuss the privacy lawsuit against Google StreetView, and so does the Spatial Law blog. See also our Google topic for Google geonews already covered on the site.

Slashdot discuss a story named Google StreetView could be unlawful in Europe. Their summary: "European data protection laws restrict the commercial use of photographs where individuals are identifiable. The law sets extra requirements for so-called sensitive personal data: it demands explicit consent, not just notification: 'If Google's multi-lens camera cars come to Europe and inadvertently find themselves taking pictures of persons leaving a church or sexual health clinic, they may just need to pull over and start picking up signatures."" Technology: Beijing 2008 Olympic Games Map 1 comment [+]
On China's official Beijing 2008 Olympics page you can find E-Map, which I guess makes it the official web map of the 2008 Olympics. While functional, it's maybe not as flashy and user-friendly as other maps that will try to attract the international attention of Olympic fans. Will it get the traffic other web maps will get?

[...] The big new content layer is the new Weather layer. This is something I've wanted to see since the beginning. Right now, the new weather layer contains three sub layers: Clouds, Radar, and Conditions and Forecasts." See also related stories below.
