From the
Reuters web site : "Alliant Techsystems Inc (US firm) said on Tuesday it will buy two units from Canada's MacDonald, Dettwiler and Associates Ltd (MDA) for $1.325 billion, as the U.S. ammunition and rocket maker looks to expand its space technology and data processing business." From the MDA web site : "MDA's Geospatial Services provides Earth observation data, information products and services from aerial platforms and the majority of commercially available radar and optical satellites." From an article of the
Ottawa Sun in Canada : "Radarsat is one of the world's most sophisticated Earth surveillance satellites, able to zoom in on objects as small as 10 metres on land or sea, 'snapping' clear pictures through dense cloud and even at night. Canadian taxpayers have invested $445 million directly in the latest Radarsat, or about 85% of the total cost. Less than 30 days after Radarsat II made orbit in December, MDA has just sold the whole thing lock, stock and solar panels as part of its deal with U.S. Alliant." MDA Space Unit Transaction Blocked
[+]
I first saw it over Canadian national news [French text] and the news is featured on a few geoblogs, the Canadian federal government blocked sale of the space technology division of MDA to a U.S. firm. The Slashdot summary: "The Canadian federal government has blocked the $1.3-billion sale of the space technology division of MacDonald, Dettwiler and Associates to Alliant Techsystems, a major US defense contractor. Industry Minister Jim Prentice is quoted as saying he is 'not satisfied' the sale will be a net benefit for Canada. MDA is Canada's leading developer of space-based technology, including the famous CanadArm and the recently installed space station robot Dextre."
