Mapperz provide details about ArcGIS Explorer's new build 410, ESRI's virtual globe, which includes many improvements. Spatially Adjusted also has an entry on the new build, but also on the release of the CAD Client for ArcSDE 9.2, a discussion on SharpMap, as an alternative to ESRI's MapObjects and finally, an interesting discussion on choosing MapDotNet instead of ArcIMS. Read more below to learn more about these products. From the last link: "That just scares me working with ESRI server software. I feel like I’m being priced out of the marketplace with their new tools. The days of writing simple and cheap Avenue or MapObjects application are over. Now you need superstars who know ArcObjects in and out and clients where price is no option. Maybe the RESI API will change this (or maybe not), but if you look around there are tons of tools available for you to use that won’t mess with your workflows and might just allow you to improve you output without spending tens of thousands of dollars."

SharpGIS writes "SharpMap v0.9b1 has just been released with full sourcecode. SharpMap is a written in C# 2.0 and is an engine for rendering maps in both web and desktop applications. SharpMap supports both ShapeFiles and PostGIS datasources, as well as ECW and JPEG2000 and can easily be extended for rendering data from other datasources. Some of the features include thematic mapping, scalable symbols, anti-aliased rendering, labels and AJAX-style usercontrols. You can download the latest release at http://sharpmap.iter.dk, read an article about it on The CodeProject, and get help in the forums."
Technology: ArcGIS for AutoCAD Released
[+]
The SYNERGIS blog tells us about the release of ArcGIS for AutoCAD (previously on Slashgeo). From ESRI's page: "ArcGIS for AutoCAD is a free application that installs on top of AutoCAD 2007 and provides access to the results of all of the GIS mapping and geoprocessing capabilities performed by ArcGIS in the form of map service images. This application accesses dynamic georeferenced ArcGIS Server map services and displays them in the AutoCAD drafting environment. The included Identify tool gives users the ability to access feature attributes stored in the underlying GIS data sets."
Technology: MapDotNet Server 2007 Launches 1 comment

The LM/VE blog links (with screenshots) to the MapDotNet Server 2007 software which just became available. Here's what it is from the website: "With MapDotNet Server 2007 developers can build .NET web mapping applications without the overhead costs of other server based GIS products. MapDotNet Server 2007 uses a custom, built-in rendering engine for your web application's maps. Drag and drop server controls allow you to connect to spatial data stores like ArcSDE® or PostGIS. MapDotNet Server can also be a tile server for Microsoft's Virtual Earth."
ArcGIS Explorer Now Available to the Public and New ESRI Blog
[+]
Spatially Adjusted informs us that ESRI's ArcGIS Explorer is now available to anyone. From the press release: "This unique lightweight application lets you not only connect directly to a variety of ready-to-use globes hosted by ESRI but also provides tasks that allow you to do more than just visualize a simple map. You can use ArcGIS Explorer to leverage data, services, and applications on the Web by easily connecting to your own ArcGIS services or those published by others. This application helps you extend the power of these Web-based services by fusing them with your local data." SA also tells us ESRI started a new blog: the ESRI Mapping Center blog. See numerous previous posts about AGX below.
Technology: REST and GIS Explained 5 comments
[+]
Anonymous Voxel writes "From rajsingh.org blog: REST has been a hot topic this year in the geo world. There’s a discussion group, a geographic data server, many blog posts, and email discussions. I’ve been mulling over what this means to OGC over the last couple months, reading RESTful Web Services, and discussing with the various advocates around the community. After all this, I think I know what’s going on, but I don’t think there’s any one clear explanation (despite some nice pieces of the puzzle here and here) available, and there has certainly been little effort to analyze the REST architecture in relation to geographic information systems theory, so that’s what I’ll try to do now." ArcGIS Server 9.3 and ArcSDE 2 comments

Spatially Adjusted has an informative entry on what's happening for the upcoming ArcGIS Server 9.3 and ArcSDE. From the post: "ArcSDE finally rides into the sunset. Even though technically ArcSDE has been replaced at 9.2, it was still a separate product. Now at 9.3 it will become fully integrated into ArcGIS Server. [...] ArcGIS supports older versions of the Geodatabase. At 9.3, ArcGIS can connect and create geodatabases (personal, file) back to 9.0. This means you won’t need to keep older versions of the geodatabase around to share with others." I copied several related stories below.
Technology: ArcGIS Explorer Build 440 Released

Spatially Adjusted informs us ESRI as released ArcGIS Explorer build 440. Here's the What's new webpage. From the official announcement: "At the top of our list are ArcIMS improvements, including the ability to access sub-layers, and the addition of new point symbols and the ability to add your own custom point symbols. We'll be covering these in more detail here on the blog. Feel free to send us your feedback, and let us know what you think. We'll also be monitoring the Explorer support forum to help you with any questions that you may have."
