Microsoft's Virtual Earth blog has details about major additions to the imagery available for Virtual Earth, the release of the API version 5 (additional info on the VE4Gov blog) and Virtual Earth's commercial use licensing (related comments on Spatially Adjusted). From the API announcement: "Of all of the requests we’ve seen and heard, the one theme that kept coming back was more options for customization. So that’s what we focused on. Are you tired of hacking your own customization into the mapcontrol? We hear you. [...] Please allow me to introduce the VEShape class. Virtual Earth pushpins, polylines, and polygons have a lot in common, and now, they are members of the same class. [...] With all this cool new shape functionality, it only makes sense to give you direct access to the shape objects, right? That’s what the VEShapeLayer class is for. As you add new shapes, throw them into a shape layer. [...] Mouse and keyboard events: [...] To satisfy demand for all possible custom events, we decided just to hand you the keys. Now, capture any keyboard or mouse event imaginable: key presses, left/right/middle mouse clicks, mouseovers on shapes, and mouse wheel scrolls.

An anonymous reader shares: "Microsoft's Virtual Earth for Government's blog post announcing new 3D market coverages and new Bird's Eye oblique imagery in many other markets. Microsoft's agreement with Pictometry has them receiving new Bird's Eye coverage frequently, further extending the advantage this flavor of spatial imagery gives their free Live Search Maps and for a fee services that use it. I'd probably also be tempted to link to one of the new 3D markets in their Live Search Maps page and comment that it looks nice when it doesn't CRASH MY BROWSER. Sorry, I get annoyed when Microsoft's products don't come anywhere close to realizing their potential."
