As expected, NASA World Wind 1.4 has been released yesterday, here's the what's new. Those interested should read The Earth is Square blog and may be interested in the World Wind Tours page. Slashdot also discuss the news, where I underline the fact that Google Earth can't be installed at work and could be a factor in favor to NASA World Wind and the Virtual Earth high resolution imagery plugin for NASA World Wind. From the what's new, you'll learn about WMS importer, time controller and a lot of new features. See also the numerous related stories below.

The Bull's rambles blog shares the development status of NASA World Wind 1.3.6, 1.4 and 1.5 and describe some new features. From the blog: "I'll list some new features now so you all know what to expect, this is not a comprehensive list it just shows the most visible changes, there are also more 'behind the scenes' changes which will make add-on/plug-in developers drawl, such as the 3Dmodel and 3Dpolygon code." In the list, you'll find: Time controller, Atmospheric scattering and sun shading, 3D compass and scalebar, Integrated web browser and Smaller footprint. Meanwhile, you can also read import cartography's questions about the efficiency of the NASA World Wind development.

NASA New Synthetic World Plans 1 comment
[+]
Slashdot discuss new NASA plans for a synthetic world targeted for 2007. Their summary: "Daniel Laughlin, Project Manager for NASA's Learning Technologies Office spoke at the International Space Flight Museum in SecondLife and said that they are using the Unreal 3 Engine to create a synthetic world for training. The mission? The moon by 2020, and Mars by 2035. He said, 'We are combining the efforts of a commercial game developer, two universities and two NASA mission directorates into the project. If we can't check off all three boxes at the end, then we'll have done a poor job.'" My question: have they thought of integrating this work with NASA World Wind?
NASA and Google Make a 'Deal'
[+]
This news item is all over the place. NASA and Google signed a "memorandum of understanding that outlines plans for cooperation on a variety of areas, including large-scale data management, massively distributed computing, bio-info-nano convergence, and encouragement of the entrepreneurial space industry". The Earth is Square blog was first to share the news, with interesting comments on the deal and NASA World Wind: "This is for a new joint NASA / Google application to bring data to the masses.. I guess NASA forgot there is NASA World Wind already to do this." (read his entry for convincing remarks). You can learn more on the deal on Slashdot, Ogle Earth, the Google Earth Blog, Bull's Ramble and finally, APB links to a CNET article.
