All Points Blog underlines the launch of the OGC Interoperability Institute. From the website: " OGCII's objectives are:
* Examine current and prior research on geospatial topics to identify research shortfalls and gaps.
* Help form research collaboratives to accomplish this research through studies, testbeds, pilot initiatives, and infrastructure development.
* Facilitate and provide education and outreach so the research brings societal benefits and improvements in government services.
* Secure funding to support research to fill these gaps."

OGC Interoperability Day Summary
[+]
The GeoFactor blog reports on last week's Open Geospatial Interoperability Day, part 1 and part 2. From the blog: "While there are some ongoing discussions on and changes upcoming to some of the OGC standards, the industry has clearly arrived regarding at least the major technical issues of geospatial data sharing. [...] Standards are great but they must be transparent to end users. Vendors are working to provide that transparency."
The OGC on OGC standards and the Geospatial Web
[+]
In their latest newsletter, the Open Geospatial Consortium shares their view on the OGC's own standards and the geospatial web. From the CTO's message: "Some of these standards are OGC standards but
others are from the Open Mobile Alliance (OMA), from ISO, from the
IEEE, or from the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF).
The reason for this is that the Geospatial Web consists of many
layers. The following is a somewhat simplistic view of the number of
layers that define the geospatial web. [...] The Geospatial Web is not just a bunch of mash-ups or even the
hundreds of SDI's that have been successfully deployed. The Geospatial
Web is about the complete integration and use of location at all
levels of the internet and the web."
Various Geospatial Articles from Directions Mag
[+]
In my attempts to make sure Slashgeo readers don't miss anything geospatially interesting out there, here's recent interesting Directions Mag articles. First, an article on participatory GIS and it's impact on development. Second, a two-parts article on enterprise location intelligence. And finally, an article on the new age of geospatial interoperability.
