Gary Sherman writes "This is an unofficial recap of the OSGF meeting, based on my recollections having spent 10 hours on IRC and the phone. I’m sure the foundation will release an official version of the day’s events, so take my comments with a grain of salt." Our story yesterday links to pictures and transcript. Update: 02/05 13:50 GMT by S :Spatially Adjusted indicates Matt Perry also offers his first thoughts.

I probably should wait for the official press release before asking questions, but I wonder how this new Foundation will relate to the OGC. I understand OGC and OSGF have different objectives (oversimplification: OGC = standards while OSGF=open source), however, they do share important goals. What do you think?

The foundation is committed to standards too. I don't think there is any conflict at all. It should also be noted that only legal enities can join OGC where as the memebers of the foundation are individuals and the focus is as you say on open source and collaboration.

For what it's worth I don't think we can build collaborative spatial software stacks of the type envisaged by the foundation with out using OGC standards. This will be especially important if we're going to build bridges between the C and java stacks.
