Pierre Marchand writes "Dear All, what exactly is ESRI's road map for webmapping? I was under the impression ArcIMS would be replaced by the "Portal" solution but it seems new extensions for ArcIMS are still coming out ... Could you please share with us any insights you have as for ESRI webmapping strategy in the next couple of years? Any leads on how ESRI's planning to address the Google maps/earth revolution would be very appreciated ... Cheers, Pierre"

I don't know much about the current state of ArcIMS at ESRI, but being a fanboy of opensource, I would advise taking a look at Mapserver [umn.edu] when it comes to webmapping. Maybe someone else can share more alternatives or inputs specific to ArcIMS?

I'm no expert on mapservers nor ESRI, but i did spent several days once trying to get ArcIMS installed and running. I wouldn't wish that kind of grief on anyone. I also dread encountering ArcIMS-hosted sites online, which are instantly identifiable by their awkward interaction and the havoc they wreak upon browser history state.
